Luis Enrique wants PSG to maintain control as Liverpool head to Paris
Paris St Germain will hope to force their style on Liverpool in order to avoid being hammered by the Merseyside club’s aggressive ‘fighter jets’ when the two teams face battle in their Champions League last 16 first leg on Wednesday.
PSG struggled at the start of the season but found their stride in late 2024, winning 18 of their last 20 competitive matches and drawing the remaining two.
The French side has also scored 21 goals in their past four games, and they advanced to the Champions League playoffs with a 10-0 aggregate win over rival Ligue 1 club Stade Brestois.
Liverpool, on the other hand, faces one of Europe’s most fearsome teams, which PSG coach Luis Enrique regards as a’source of motivation’.
“It’ll be intense. On paper, this is one of the best matches to see in Europe. “They’re one of the best teams in terms of counterattacking,” Luis Enrique said at a press conference on Tuesday.
“We must take care not to suffer as a result of their transition. They have three fighter jets attacking; it will be difficult to stop them until we force our game on them.”
While he declined to elaborate on the areas in which he believes PSG outperforms Liverpool, the Spanish coach did suggest that the Ligue 1 winners may be dangerous if they can control possession.
“We’ll need the ball. “We may not be as physical, but we are one of the best possession teams in Europe,” he continued.
PSG has no injury concerns heading into the game, which will be played at Anfield next Tuesday.
“The first game will not determine who gets through,” Luis Enrique stated.
“If we were to lose at home and then win (and qualify) at Anfield, of course I would take that.”
