Joel Embiid of the 76ers will miss the remainder of the season due to a knee injury

Joel Embiid, the standout center for the Philadelphia 76ers, has been sidelined for the rest of the season due to persistent problems with his left knee, the organization said on Friday.

According to the 76ers, Embiid and the organization have been seeking advice from experts regarding his ailing knee.

“After further evaluation, it has been determined that he is medically unable to play and will miss the remainder of the season to focus on treatment and rehabilitation,” the Philadelphia 76ers stated in a statement.

“To ascertain the precise course of treatment, we are consulting with medical professionals…. Joel will continue to be worked with by the team and experts to determine the best course of action for his long-term performance and well-being.

Embiid, 30, is averaging 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in just 19 of the Sixers’ 58 games this season. The seven-time All-Star and 2022–23 MVP is shooting 44.4 percent from the field, much behind his career average of 50.1.

Embiid played just 31 minutes in last Saturday’s 105-103 loss to the Brooklyn Nets, who were visiting. After dropping the ball late in the third quarter, he went down, looked sluggish to get back up, and was unable to play in the fourth quarter. After the game, he had swelling in his knee.

The two-time scoring champion only appeared in 39 games the previous season after undergoing surgery in February 2024 for a meniscus rupture in his knee.
