Eskom reports that South Africa is experiencing Stage 3 power disruptions
After a “temporary setback,” South Africa’s Eskom announced it will cut 3,000 megawatts of electricity in controlled outages, or loadshedding as it is called locally, starting at 5:30 p.m. (1530 GMT) on Saturday and continuing until further notice.
After ten months of continuous supply, Eskom instituted comparable power interruptions at the end of January in an effort to address the ongoing disruptions that have hampered economic growth for years.
Eskom stated in a statement that it will give an update on Sunday, although it did not specify the nature of the most recent setback.
Loadshedding, an incremental approach where stage 1 involves 1,000 MW being cut from the national grid, and stage 6 being the largest applied to date, is frequently caused by regular outages at its fleet of aging coal-fired plants that supply the majority of energy in Africa’s most industrialized country.
