Angela Bassett, Star of “Black Panther,” Talks About Her 2023 Loss of Oscar

Angela Bassett should have been “allowed to be disappointed” when she lost to Jamie Lee Curtis, and she “deserved” an Oscar.

At the 2023 Academy Awards, the 66-year-old actress was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the Marvel film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” However, Jamie won the award for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and Angela’s heartbreaking response to her defeat went viral.
Despite this, she maintains that she had every right to be upset when she didn’t win the coveted prize.

“I thought it was interesting [the response],” she told Town + Country magazine. Odd that I would not be permitted to feel let down by a result that I believed I deserved.

I adore giving people applause. But at that very moment …

Additionally, she added: “No, I have put in: put in the time, put in good work overtime.” I didn’t consider that a present. I assumed that was obvious.

Previously nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for her performance as Tina Turner in the 1994 biopic “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” Angela accepted an Academy Honorary Award in 2024 and acknowledged that she was “humbled” by the honor.

“Decades, huh?” Angela replied after gathering her gong. Innumerable blessings, roles and roles, and decades and decades.

“I felt the love for the moviegoers who went to see it and supported it.” Though I’m chilling now, I’ve felt the love for years. They have prayed, fretted, written, and provided support for me, after all. That’s why receiving this feels so good. It humbles me.

The Emmy Award winner, who is married to Courtney B. Vance and has twins, Bronwyn and Slater, who are teenagers, also expressed gratitude to her family for their unwavering support.
