Shields became the first woman to win the title of undisputed heavyweight champion

Claressa Shields, an American, defeated her countrywoman Danielle Perkins by unanimous decision to win the women’s heavyweight championship in front of a Flint, Michigan, home crowd on Sunday, becoming the first undisputed world champion in boxing history in three weight classes.

In the tenth and final round, Shields, who also took home gold at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, knocked down Perkins with seconds remaining, advancing her professional career record to 16-0.

Along with her undisputed middleweight and light-middleweight belts, Shields, 29, now has the title of undisputed champion in a third weight class.

She is the sole boxer—male or female—to accomplish the feat.

“To tell the truth, it feels unreal. My training camp was incredibly challenging. Shields said, “I was unable to use my good jab today because I just tore my labrum in my left shoulder last Friday.”

In my homeland, I had prayed to God for a fierce battle, therefore I didn’t want to call it off. He took that action. So, I made the decision to continue.

“I’m very joyful. And a special thanks to Danielle Perkins, my opponent. That chick has incredible strength, man.
