Almiron leaves Newcastle after six years to return to Atlanta

After six years at Newcastle United, Paraguay international Miguel Almiron has returned to Atlanta United of Major League Soccer (MLS) for an unknown amount, the two teams said Thursday.

The 30-year-old winger’s contract with the American team is set to expire in 2027, with a one-year extension option. In 2019, Newcastle paid a club-record 21 million pounds ($26.19 million) to acquire him from the MLS team.

With 30 goals and 12 assists in 223 games with the Magpies, Almiron was a major contributor to Eddie Howe’s team’s fourth-place finish in the 2022–2023 Premier League.

“I want to express my gratitude to Miggy for all that he has done for us while we have been together. In a statement released on Thursday, Howe stated, “He has been the epitome of professionalism and has played a significant role in some of our most memorable moments in recent seasons.”

“He is a great person, and we’ll miss him greatly, but this is the right move at the right time for him and his family and we wish them well.”

With 41 points after 23 games, Newcastle is currently ranked fifth in the league. On Saturday, they play Fulham in the league.
