The daughter of former South African President Zuma is accused of inciting rioting in 2021

Daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, charged with inciting violence during 2021 riots that claimed over 300 lives, made an appearance in court on Thursday.

Zuma-Sambudla’s attorney stated that she would enter a not guilty plea.

Prosecutors claim that in July 2021, when turmoil erupted following her father’s detention for defying a court order to testify in a corruption inquiry, Zuma-Sambudla posted on social media, inciting others to carry out violent crimes.

Anger at Zuma’s imprisonment evolved into a fury over poverty and inequality, which resulted in the looting of thousands of stores, significant damage to public infrastructure, and the deaths of over 350 people.

Estimates of the riots’ financial damage reached to 50 billion rand ($2.70 billion).

Zuma-Sambudla went to the court in Durban with Jacob Zuma. After being placed on caution, she was allowed to return to court in March.

Following the expiration of his contempt of court sentence in 2022, Zuma supported uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), a new political party that significantly disrupted the national election the previous year.

Since MK gained 58 parliamentary seats, support for Zuma’s former party, the African National Congress (ANC), has drastically declined. The ANC was compelled to join other smaller parties in a broad coalition.

One of the members of MK’s lower house of parliament is Zuma-Sambudla.
