Guardiola fears a financial blow if Man City doesn’t make it further in the Champions League
Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, stated that he is aware of the financial consequences of his team not making it to the Champions League knockout rounds. The team has to defeat Club Brugge in their last group match on Wednesday in order to be in the running.
Since Guardiola took over as manager in 2016, City has advanced to the Champions League knockout rounds each season. However, with the new system, they might overlook the playoffs this year, as they now rank 25th in the standings.
The top eight teams move straight to the round of 16, while the teams who place ninth through twenty-four compete in the knockout phase playoffs. Guardiola stated that City’s failure to advance might have an impact on their transfer market operations.
“It has consistently been favorable over the past two or three transfer windows. Guardiola said to reporters on Tuesday, “I’m not inexperienced enough to not understand how crucial it is for the club to succeed financially in this competition.”
Although it may have an impact on the team, we naturally want to strive to make it happen and proceed first for athletic reasons.
“The net spend at this club has been incredible over the past five or six years. “Okay, the situation is the situation,” the club replied. We are free to spend if we so want. We don’t spend otherwise.
Omar Marmoush, an attacker, and defenders Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov have already cost City almost 120 million pounds ($149.14 million) this month.
In 2023, City won the Champions League, and Guardiola refrained from talking about how humiliating it would be if they didn’t make it to the next round.
“If we lose the game, we will not be allowed to continue in the competition. He declared, “We want to advance so we can play two more games and earn a spot in the next round.”
“I understand that not qualifying worries you, but I believe we will succeed. After the game, ask me if it would be embarrassing for City to not qualify.
Guardiola claimed that although City defeated Brugge 5-1 and 4-1 in the 2021–22 season, the Belgian squad is very different from the one they faced three seasons prior.
In the Champions League rankings, Brugge is three points ahead of City in 20th place and hasn’t lost a game in all competitions since late October.
“We would like to score lots of goals in the first 20 minutes, but I don’t think that will happen,” Guardiola stated.
“I anticipate a difficult game. The reason a team is undefeated is because they are good; there is no secret. They’ve performed really well. For both of us, and especially for us, it’s the end.
