In the AFC Championship, the Chiefs defeat the Bills, and they will face the Eagles in the Super Bowl
Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs to a Super Bowl matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday after defeating the Buffalo Bills 32-29 in the AFC Championship game. Mahomes ran in two touchdowns and passed for another.
If the Chiefs defeat the Eagles, who crushed Washington in the NFC Championship game, they will go to the NFL title decider for the fifth time in six years and have the opportunity to win the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the third consecutive year.
The NFL Championship game in 2023, in which the Chiefs defeated the Eagles 38-35, will be rematched in the Super Bowl in New Orleans on February 9.
The Bills haven’t won a road playoff game since 1993, and after a valiant comeback in the second half, they ultimately lost to the thunderous cheers of the Kansas City supporters at Arrowhead Stadium in the closing seconds.
“I’m just so proud of my teammates and how they responded,” Mahomes stated. “I’m just at a loss for words – excited for New Orleans.”
Buffalo was behind 21-16 at the half, but they rallied in the third quarter. On fourth and goal, James Cook stretched his arm to bring the ball over the line and took a soaring jump into the end zone.
Five minutes into a tense fourth quarter, Mahomes, who had thrown for 245 yards and a score, responded with a 10-yard run into the end zone and made a two-point try to restore the lead.
Four minutes later, Josh Allen, the quarterback for the Bills, tied the score with a four-yard throw to Curtis Samuel on fourth and goal. However, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker’s 35-yard field goal on the following possession turned the tide once more.
On the Bills’ last drive, the Chiefs defense increased the pressure on Allen after a long ball to Dalton Kincaid eluded the tight end’s grasp.
“It’s not about one guy, it’s not about a couple guys, it’s about the whole entire team,” Mahomes said. “The defense got stops when we needed them to. We made plays, offence. It was a collaborative effort, which is why we are so unique.
Running back Saquon Barkley rumbled for three touchdowns and quarterback Jalen Hurts scored four, three rushing and one throwing, as the Eagles crushed the Commanders 55-23 earlier on Sunday.
Hurts stated, “We just took it a play at a time,” “Without the guys around me and the preparation we put in, I couldn’t accomplish any of those things.” “We have to finish it.”
Following their devastating defeat to the Chiefs two years ago, in which they blew a 10-point halftime lead, the Eagles will compete for their second Super Bowl championship.
