Greek MPs’ first-round vote fails to produce a new president
A new president was not elected by Greek legislators in the first round of voting on Saturday.
For one of the candidates proposed by political parties to assume the post, which was mainly ceremonial, a majority of 200 ballots in the 300-seat parliament was required.
Another referendum is scheduled for January 31, but it is anticipated to be inconclusive as well.
The required majority decreases to 180 votes after two rounds and subsequently to 151 votes. A straightforward majority of those in attendance is necessary for the final round of voting.
Constantine Tassoulas, the former speaker of the parliament, has been proposed for the position by the center-right administration, which exercises control over 156 seats.
