Malian singer Rokia Traore will be released from a prison in Belgium, according to reports from a news source
According to her attorneys, Malian singer Rokia Traore, who was detained in Rome last year due to a global child custody issue and subsequently turned over to Belgium, will be released from a Belgian jail on Wednesday, according to local news agency Belga.
It was not immediately possible for Reuters to confirm the release with local authorities or get in touch with Traore’s representatives.
From 2016 until 2018, Traore, 50, one of Africa’s most well-known vocalists, served as a goodwill ambassador for the UNHCR, the UN organization that handles refugees.
Last November, when her appeal was denied by Italy’s highest court, Italian authorities turned over the Malian singer to Belgium.
In October 2023, she was found guilty in absentia in the custody dispute over her daughter and given a two-year prison sentence in Belgium.
In 2020, she was initially taken into custody in France on a Belgian warrant for not adhering to a court order related to the singer’s conflict with her estranged Belgian ex-partner, Jan Goossens, for custody of their daughter.
However, months after being granted conditional freedom, she disregarded orders to stay in France while her extradition case was being handled and took a private airplane to Mali. In Mali, her daughter resides.
