Luis Enrique thinks that the unique PSG-Man City match won’t be a season-defining event

Luis Enrique and Pep Guardiola, who were once friends and coworkers, will face one other in Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City’s Champions League matchup. However, the PSG manager stated on Tuesday that he hopes the match won’t be the most crucial of their season.

Luis Enrique and Guardiola played together at Barcelona and with Spain. The current PSG coach was in charge of the Barcelona B squad while Guardiola was manager of Barcelona. The two buddies are meeting in Paris at a challenging moment.

With PSG in seventh position and 25th place in the rankings, one spot outside the playoff zone for the knockout round, and City in 22nd place, both managers have had a difficult season in the Champions League.

Before Wednesday’s game, Luis Enrique told reporters, “Tomorrow is a special match, not just because of the importance for the two teams but because I will be up against a friend who I played with for many years and we crossed paths as coaches.”

“I hope the match versus Manchester City isn’t the most crucial one; instead, I hope it’s in the following round of the competition, where the trophy is up for grabs.

“That is what I hope for.”

However, the PSG manager is aware that the matchup with City in the league phase’s last match might be pivotal in determining both teams’ futures in the tournament.

“I hope to have other more important games, but this is a special game because in the new format of the Champions League I don’t think anyone could predict that City would have this number of points ahead of match day seven,” he stated.

However, that is the new format and that is football. Nobody can tell us how many points we will need to qualify at this time. We could learn that after this match day.

This season, PSG has lost away games to Arsenal and Bayern Munich, but the coach believes that their home games against PSV Eindhoven and Atletico Madrid have cost them the most.

“We ought to have defeated PSV and Atletico at home. According to Luis Enrique, that is the truth.

“We should have won both of those games on the field, but football is more complicated than that. We would already be moving on to the next round with those five points.”
