Trump promises to rescue America from falling behind
Strengthened Donald Trump announced that “America’s decline is over” when he took back the office on Monday, January 20. He promised to be tough on illegal immigrants and presented himself as a God-chosen leader to help a struggling country.
“January 20, 2025, is Liberation Day for Americans,” said Trump, 78, in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol, which represents U.S. democracy.
The inauguration marks a successful comeback for a controversial politician who has been impeached twice, escaped two murder attempts, was found guilty in a criminal trial, and faced charges for trying to change the result of his 2020 election loss to Joe Biden.
He is the first president in over 100 years to win a second term after losing the White House, and he is also the first person with a felony record to be president.
“I was saved by God to make America great again,” Trump said on Monday, referring to the assassin’s bullet that missed his ear in July.
Trump announced several major executive orders he intends to sign right away. These orders aim to reduce immigration, increase fossil fuel production, and relax environmental rules. This is the beginning of a wide-ranging plan to change the government and challenge the power of the presidency.
He announced that he would declare a national emergency at the southern border with Mexico, send troops there, and bring back a rule that makes asylum-seeking migrants wait in Mexico for their U.S. court hearings. This is all part of what he calls an extraordinary plan to deport millions of immigrants.
“All illegal entry will stop right away, and we will start sending back millions of criminals to their home countries,” he said, while Republican colleagues cheered and Democrats remained quiet.
Shortly after the inauguration, U.S. border officials said they had shut down a Biden program that allowed hundreds of thousands of migrants to enter the U.S. legally by making an appointment on an app. Reuters reports that the current meetings were canceled.
In his 30-minute speech, he repeated some ideas from his first inauguration in 2017, when he talked about the “American carnage” that he said had harmed the country.
While Trump tried to present himself as a healer and someone who brings people together, his speech was often very divided. He repeated untrue statements from his campaign about other countries sending their prisoners to America and shared the same old baseless complaints about his legal troubles.
With Biden sitting close by and trying to look nice, Trump strongly criticized his past policies on issues like immigration and foreign relations.
“Trump said that our government spends unlimited money to protect other countries’ borders but won’t protect America’s borders or its own people.”
Many tech leaders, including the three richest men in the world—Elon Musk from Tesla and SpaceX, Jeff Bezos from Amazon, and Mark Zuckerberg from Meta—were given important spots on stage. They were seated next to cabinet nominees and members of Trump’s family as they tried to gain favor with the new administration.
Trump announced he would send humans to Mars, which made Musk, who has often discussed living on Mars, excitedly raise his hands on stage.
Trump promised to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America and said he wants to regain control of the Panama Canal. These statements about foreign policy have worried U.S. partners.
