New Jersey fifth-grade teacher accused of sexually assaulting student and purportedly having his child

A teacher in New Jersey has been charged with sexually abusing a student for four years and is also accused of having his child with the student, according to officials this week.

Laura Caron, 34, a 5th-grade teacher at Middle Township Elementary School in Cape May Court House, was arrested on January 15, 2025.

According to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, she is facing charges of serious sexual assault, sexual assault, and putting a child in danger.

Authorities claim that Caron had a sexual relationship with one of her students that started in 2016 when the boy was around 11 years old. The abuse reportedly went on until 2020, when the child was 14 or 15 years old. Investigators also admitted that the student was living at Caron’s home during this time and, on multiple occasions, woke up in Caron’s bed, according to a statement of probable cause received by NBC Philadelphia.

The investigation started in December 2024 when the victim’s father shared a post on Facebook. He suggested that Caron’s 5-year-old child looked like him and his son. The post prompted a closer investigation, and the victim later told family members through a text message and phone call that he was the child’s father, as stated in the criminal charge.

On January 15, the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, Middle Township Police, and the Special Victims Unit arrested Caron without any problems. A legal search request was also carried out at her house.

Prosecutors say the Middle Township School District was informed about the accusations and is fully working with the probe. The district is providing counseling and assistance for kids, staff, and families affected by the news.

Caron is still in prison and will appear in court for the first time on Wednesday. It is not clear if she has a lawyer to defend her.
