Simons of Leipzig scores twice as Klopp looks on
As new Red Bull Head of Global Soccer Juergen Klopp watched from the sidelines, RB Leipzig defeated visiting Werder Bremen 4-2 on Sunday thanks to two goals from Xavi Simons, who had recovered from injury.
Klopp began his new position on January 1 and will serve as advisor to the Red Bull-owned clubs in Germany, the US, Brazil, and Austria. Klopp, who had a successful nine-year tenure at Liverpool last season, has coached Mainz 05 and Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.
In his first appearance since suffering a ligament injury in October, Dutch international Xavi looked in excellent shape as he put Leipzig ahead in the 24th minute.
Mitchell Weiser gave Werder, who had won their previous three league games prior to the winter break, a two-minute lead, but Xavi scored his second goal of the afternoon with an incredible solo effort and a little deflected shot that struck the crossbar.
Two minutes after the restart, Benjamin Sesko ended the match with a spectacular 25-meter strike that traveled 126 km/h.
Antonio Nusa’s incredible single run in the 81st gave the home team a chance to score a fourth goal, but his low shot struck the post. Werder grabbed a goal back through Oliver Burke in stoppage time after Christoph Baumgartner improved to make it 4-1.
