Local media say that Mauritius’ former central bank governor was freed on bail

According to a local publication, the former governor of Mauritius’ central bank was arrested and accused of conspiring to commit fraud, although he was later released on bail.

The government of Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, who has claimed that the previous administration fabricated the nation’s gross domestic product, budget deficit, and public debt data for years, made its first significant step Friday when Harvesh Seegolam was detained.

It was not immediately possible to get in touch with Seegolam’s attorney or the police.

Without providing references, the daily l’Express’s online version stated that the bail amount was 500,000 Mauritius Rupees ($10,522).

Ravi Yerrigadoo, Seegolam’s attorney, verified his client’s release on bail in a brief video that was uploaded by Le Défi Media Group.

“You will understand that out of respect for the investigation still on and for the institution I will not say more.”
