President Gabriel Boric is the first American leader to visit the South Pole, making history in the process.
In addition to highlighting Chile’s expanding commitment to scientific exploration and climate change research, the historic trips to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station confirmed Chile’s claim to Antarctic sovereignty.
Boric declared on Chilean television, “This is a milestone for us.” “The Chilean president is visiting the South Pole for the first time and discussing Chile’s Antarctic mission.”
Amidst scientists and defense and environment cabinet members, Boric underscored Chile’s resolve to spearhead international Antarctic research projects. According to his administration, the visit demonstrated Chile’s aspiration to serve as the world’s entry point to the Antarctic.
Boric was the only other international leader to visit the South Pole, along with the prime ministers of Norway and New Zealand.
Established in 1961 by the Antarctic Treaty, the continent is protected as a scientific sanctuary free from both government and native inhabitants.
Chile has long claimed parts of Antarctica together with other countries, which has led to continued scientific and political cooperation in the area.
