Stormzy Gets a Nine-Month Driving Ban

Stormzy has been prohibited from operating a motor vehicle for nine months.

After being caught by an off-duty police officer using his phone while driving his Rolls-Royce Wraith in Addison Road, Kensington, west London, in March 2024, the “Big For Your Boots” hitmaker, whose real name is Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr., entered a guilty plea in writing to Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard an off-duty police officer knock on the car’s tinted passenger window and say, “Get off your phone and get rid of your tints,” according to MailOnline.

Stormzy wrote to the court with a change of plea after previously denying using his phone while driving.

He had earlier acknowledged operating his yellow Lamborghini Urus in Coombe Lane, Kingston-upon-Thames, in October 2023 with unlawfully tinted front windows that allowed only 4% light transmission (compared to 70%).

Driving the Lamborghini puts “vulnerable road users at risk,” according to prosecutor Alice Holloway’s statement on Thursday.

District Judge Andrew Sweet, who handed down the sentence, deemed the 31-year-old star’s driving record “not good” and denounced the musician’s behavior as “dangerous and irresponsible.”

“The court has given credit to guilty pleas,” he stated.

“That petition, which relates to using a mobile phone, is made later in the day and receives little credit.

When it comes to Mr. Owuo Jr.’s driving behavior, his record is not very excellent.

“He has a lot of points on his license, and it’s obvious that driving while using a cell phone and tinted windows is risky and careless in this instance.”

Stormzy “appreciates that he will be disqualified” from driving, according to his attorney Csemiczky, but he was “pleased to update the court he has now removed the tint from his vehicles.”

Stormzy was forced to pay £400 in costs and a £460 victim surcharge in addition to being fined £900 for using a cell phone while driving and £250 for driving with improperly tinted windows.
