Information on American comedian Dave Chapelle’s 2024 private performance in Kenya is starting to surface.
In a recent interview, creator, producer, and director Eric Lu Savali disclosed that Chapelle’s crew had been monitoring him and his work for a considerable amount of time.
“They said to other people, ‘We’re trying to accomplish this,’ and they were like, ‘We’ve been watching, we’ve been listening. Who should I talk to about this? They have a whole dossier.
When word got out about his attendance, Eric told the Financially Incorrect YouTube channel that he was under pressure.
Behind-the-scenes tales of bringing Dave Chappelle to Nairobi, overcoming corruption and bribes, and escaping a harrowing kidnapping were shared by Eric.
How did Eric get Dave Chapelle to travel to Kenya? “I believe I wrote in my joke book when I first started doing stand-up comedy that the best comedian of the previous generation visited Nairobi in 1978 but was never given the opportunity to perform. Wouldn’t it be incredible if the best comedian of our time came to Nairobi and gave a show here?
“The dream was always there to try and get Dave to perform in Nairobi,” Eric clarified. I sent out calls, emails, direct messages, and anything else. However, nothing was ever found.
Given Chapelle’s lack of social media activity, he disclosed that he contacted nearly everyone: “I sent his wife, Elaine, a message—every single person I could think of,” he said. Then, due of an NDA in effect, there are some topics I can and cannot discuss in 2024.”
The turning point was described by Eric as follows: “I can just say that one night in April or May, while I was getting ready for bed, my phone rang. A voice said, “Hey, how are you?” Listen, this and that, we’re coming to Nairobi. Can the Vineyard be played? What, I wonder? “My people will get in touch or whatever,” they said.
“Dave was on the phone, but I was like, someone is pranking me,” Eric said, initially believing it to be a joke. ‘Yo, is this Eric?’ he asked as he began to speak.
After he was approached by Chapelle’s team, Eric was perplexed by the location Dave had mentioned: “What is this Vineyard you’re talking about? They began sending me photos and information about us, demonstrating the thoroughness of his people.
“They were like, we want something small, something intimate, and we kept pushing,” Eric said, revealing that bringing Dave Chapelle to Kenya needed much planning. Then his people said, “Let’s make arrangements.”
Many Kenyans thought the performance was spontaneous, but Eric brushed this off, saying, “No, those people are thorough.” They don’t act spontaneously. We had plenty of time. We needed to receive training on how to set up, bag, tag, and anticipate things.
Few people were aware that Chapelle would travel to Kenya. Simply put, we kept it a secret. It’s simply fantastic; we had a fantastic show when he arrived.”
According to Eric’s description of his meeting with the renowned comic, “He is humble and down to earth.”
Following his stay in Kenya, Chapelle traveled to Rwanda and Senegal as part of his African trip. In retrospect, Eric remarked: “I believe that was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. “All the way here, Dave Chapelle,” he said, gesturing to the top.
Details of their continuing connection were also disclosed by Eric: “He occasionally simply checks in, saying things like, ‘Yo, how are you doing? How are things going? How is the infant doing? How is the wife doing? It’s incredible that someone can be that frank and compassionate.
Eric alluded to the lengthy preparations by saying, “I cannot say; even some of what I’ve said, I don’t think I should say it,” even though he was unable to confirm how long it took to bring Chapelle to Kenya because of an NDA. However, we had plenty of time to obtain all the necessary permissions, support, and reservations.
“No, I don’t think Dave does things for money,” Eric responded when asked if Chapelle had come for financial gain.
The $50 tickets ran out quickly. “We didn’t expect the tickets to sell out,” Eric clarified. We made that choice very deliberately because we wanted this to be available to everyone.
