McCarthy explains why Ten Hag failed to notice Diallo
Benni McCarthy, a former Manchester United coach, has explained why former manager Erik ten Hag failed to see Amad Diallo.
Since Ruben Amorim took over for Ten Hag in November, Ivory Coast winger Diallo has become one of the Red Devils’ greatest players, making fans wonder why the adaptable wide player did not play a bigger part sooner.
Additionally, McCarthy, who was employed by the Dutch coach at Old Trafford from 2022 to 2024, has revealed that Ten Hag frequently gave preference to his acquisitions when choosing squads, especially in cases where they performed poorly.
McCarthy responded, “Tactically, when we set up, the manager felt that Antony was the best, better player for the job that he wanted because he knew Antony from Ajax,” when asked why Diallo had not played more on the “Podcast and Chill Network.” He invested in him because he was his player, and the club helped him.
Naturally, he had to back the player he purchased, which is, I believe, why he continued to play Antony. He did so since he was aware of Antony’s potential during his peak.
In addition, Alejandro Garnacho was playing effectively and scored goals. (Marcus) Rashford could destroy anyone at any time. Then you have (Rasmus) Hojlund, who must play because you spent £70 million to bring him in.
“Someone has to (miss out), and sadly for Amad, the manager chooses the player he believes is most likely to be more capable for those kinds of games in terms of tactics, defense, and attack.”
When Manchester United and Diallo play Wolverhampton Wanderers away from home on Thursday, December 26, they will be looking to get back to winning ways in the Premier League.
