Costco Recalls Eggs Following FDA Salmonella Risk Warning
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a strong warning about possible salmonella contamination, alerting Costco customers in the Southeastern United States to check their eggs.
The FDA has categorized the recall, which involves Handsome Brook Farms cage-free eggs marketed under Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand, as a Category 1 recall, which carries the highest risk rating.
The FDA claims that this designation denotes “a reasonable probability” that eating the contaminated eggs might cause fatalities or major health problems. The recall draws attention to the possible risks associated with the tainted goods, even though no illnesses have been documented thus far.
Particularly, the recall is applicable to boxes with the Julian code 327 and the “Use By” date of January 5, 2025. Starting on November 22, 2024, these eggs were delivered to 25 Costco stores in Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
Last month, Handsome Brook Farms started the recall after learning that eggs that weren’t meant for retail sales had been sent to Costco locations in incorrect packaging. In response, the business said that in order to avoid future mistakes of this nature, it has added more supply chain controls and retraining.
Fever, diarrhea, nausea, and more serious problems can result from the foodborne infection salmonella, especially in young children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems. Customers who bought the impacted eggs are urged to either throw them away or send them back to Costco for a reimbursement.
No other Handsome Brook Farms or Costco goods are affected by this recall, the FDA has stressed.
