A Senior NYPD Officer Steps Down After Supposedly Offering Sexual Favors in Exchange for Overtime
Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey, the highest ranking officer in the New York Police Department, has resigned due to allegations of sexual misconduct.
Maddrey’s three-decade career came to an end when Police Commissioner Jessica Tish accepted her resignation late Friday, according to a department statement. Maddrey’s retirement took effect immediately.
According to reports, Maddrey joined the NYPD in 1991 and advanced to the top of the force very fast. He is currently facing charges of “quid pro quo sexual harassment” against Lt. Quathisha Epps, a subordinate in his office. According to her, Maddrey tried to pressure her into performing sexual favors in return for possibilities to work extra. Maddrey allegedly accused Epps of abusing overtime when she refused, which resulted in her being suspended without pay.
According to Epps’ lawyer Eric Sanders, “these kinds of actions have been years in the making.” “It’s been a long time since this resignation.”
According to reports, Epps earned over $400,000 this year, of which over half came from overtime. As a result, Epps became the NYPD’s highest-paid employee for the fiscal year. Sanders defended Epps’ overtime compensation in response to Maddrey’s allegations, claiming that Maddrey and other officials had authorized everything.
Maddrey is also charged with other misbehavior, according to police captain Gabrielle Walls’ statements. She said that over the years, Maddrey had made unwelcome sexual approaches toward her. Walls recalled locking herself in rooms to evade his approaches in her lawsuit.
Captain Walls’ lawyer, John Scola, stated that this should serve as a wake-up call. “To eradicate the widespread culture of harassment and retaliation, the NYPD needs a cultural change.”
However, Lambros Lambrou, Maddrey’s lawyer, has now denied the accusations, calling them “wholly baseless.”
