The World Food Program reports that an aircraft strike in Sudan killed three employees

The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) said on Friday that an aircraft strike on its facility on Thursday killed three of its employees in the war-torn state of Blue Nile in Sudan.

“It is unacceptable for someone to die while performing humanitarian work. “Humanitarians are not and should never be a target,” stated Cindy McCain, executive director of the World Food Program. “I demand a thorough investigation and for the perpetrators to be held accountable.”

The executions infuriated U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, according to his spokesperson.

The Sudanese government issued a statement expressing its sorrow for the deceased and denouncing any assault on the United Nations or relief personnel. Although the army did not have any actions in the region, it stated that it will look into the occurrence.

The world’s largest displacement and food crises began in April 2023 when the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces went to war in preparation for a scheduled transition to civilian government.

“The World Food Program is still dedicated to providing aid throughout Sudan, especially Blue Nile State. WFP will remain in Sudan and provide essential nutrition and food assistance in every area. In a statement, McCain added, “This is what our fallen colleagues would have wanted.”
