Ukrainian President Zelensky Says Russia’s Invasion Killed 43,000 Soldiers
President Zelensky has revealed 43,000 deaths in Russia and Ukraine, while the exact number is unknown since the number of people killed in the conflict continues to climb.
During Russia’s full-scale assault, 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed, Volodymyr Zelensky said in a rare admission of the country’s losses.
According to the Ukrainian president’s social media post, 370,000 injuries had been reported; however, this number included soldiers who had sustained multiple injuries, and some of the injuries were reportedly minor.
There had been 550,000 Russian soldiers injured and 198,000 dead, he added.
The numbers from either side are still pending verification.
Moscow and Kyiv have been hesitant to disclose their own losses, despite the fact that they have both frequently released estimates of the other side’s.
Ukrainian fatalities have significantly increased since the year began, according to the new figure.
In February, Zelensky last provided an update on Ukraine’s death toll, putting it at 31,000.
According to reports, the Ukrainian president was forced to make the statement after Donald Trump, the next US president-elect, said on social media that Ukraine had “ridiculously lost” 400,000 soldiers while almost 600,000 Russians had been killed or injured. Trump made no mention of the sources of these numbers.
The president-elect, who has long expressed his desire to terminate the war, claimed that too many lives have been “needlessly wasted.”
Senior Western authorities have estimated that Russia has lost about 800,000 people, both dead and wounded, which is comparable to Zelensky’s estimations.
Russia lost 45,680 soldiers in November alone, more than in any other month since the start of its full-scale invasion in February 2022, according to the UK’s defense minister.
Most recently, UK Defense Intelligence estimates that 1,523 Russian soldiers are killed and wounded daily on average.
It claims that on November 28, Russia suffered its first-ever loss of almost 2,000 men in a single day.
Moscow rejects those numbers. The Kremlin said in a statement that Ukrainian losses were “many times higher” than Russian ones.
Due to their “meat grinder” methods, it is generally agreed upon outside of Russia that Russian casualty numbers are significantly greater than Ukraine’s.
The death toll from the war has only increased due to recent developments.
Since the beginning of the year, Russian forces have moved steadily forward along the eastern front line, retaking and occupying over 2,350 square kilometers of terrain, or 907 square miles, in eastern Ukraine and the Kursk area of western Russia.
In August, Ukrainian forces launched a surprise attack into Russia and took control of a small portion of Russian territory.
More than 38,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or injured in Kursk alone, according to the Russian defense ministry, however this figure cannot be confirmed.
In 2014, Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula.
It invaded Ukraine in full eight years later, taking control of both the east and south of the country.
In a post discussing the likelihood of a war ending, Zelensky brought up Ukraine’s war dead.
It comes after discussions between Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Saturday. Trump has been trying to take advantage of the opinion that about 25% of Americans believe the US is giving Ukraine too much support.
Trump has stated time and time again during the campaign that he could put an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine “in a day,” but he has not yet articulated his plans.
Any peace agreement must be supported by strong international guarantees for the security of his nation, Zelensky emphasized in his piece.
He said he warned Trump and Macron that Moscow would not “destroy in a few years” the “enduring peace” that Kyiv needs.
The Kremlin said it was open to talks in response to Trump’s demand for an immediate ceasefire, but Russian President Vladimir Putin had established the terms for a ceasefire in June.
Among his demands were that Ukraine cede more of its land and give up its aspirations to join NATO, both of which Kyiv has resisted.
