Trump claims that Russia turned its back on Assad
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump claimed on Sunday that Russia’s failure to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was the reason for his downfall, adding that Moscow never ought to have offered him protection in the first place and then turned its back on him due to an unwarranted conflict in Ukraine.
“Assad is no longer there. He left his nation. On his social media account Truth Social, Trump said, “Russia, Russia, Russia, commanded by (President) Vladimir Putin, was no longer interested in defending him.
“There was no reason for Russia to be there in the first place,” said Trump. “They lost all interest in Syria because of Ukraine … a war that should never have started and could go on forever.”
Russia and Iran, Assad’s other principal supporters, “are in a weakened state right now, one because of Ukraine and a bad economy, the other because of Israel and its fighting success,” Trump, who becomes office on January 20, continued.
Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Saturday in Paris when they were both attending a ceremony to restore Notre-Dame Cathedral. Trump has stated that he will work to put an immediate stop to the war in Ukraine.
He said that hundreds of thousands of servicemen had been killed or injured in both Russia and Ukraine, and that many civilians had also been lost in Ukraine. “There should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin,” he said, adding that the Ukrainian leader “would like to make a deal and stop the madness.”
“I am familiar with Vladimir. Now is his moment to take action. China can assist. “The world is waiting.”
