Neuer of Bayern was given his first-ever red card and was suspended for two domestic cup matches
The German Football Federation (DFB) announced on Thursday that Manuel Neuer, the captain of Bayern Munich, has been suspended for two games in the German Cup for “unsportsmanlike conduct” during Tuesday’s play against Bayer Leverkusen.
After going out of line and knocking down Jeremie Frimpong, the 38-year-old goalie was shown his first red card in his nearly two-decade career.
Referee Harm Osmers dismissed Neuer in the 17th minute of Bayern’s 1-0 loss to Leverkusen as a result of the incident.
In a statement, DFB stated, “The player is also banned from all of his club’s other cup matches until the ban expires.”
“According to established DFB case law, the prevention of an obvious scoring chance by a non-serious foul without subsequent scoring usually entails a two-match suspension.”
Neuer would not be subject to the ban until the next season because it only applies to domestic cup matches and Bayern is not participating in the German Cup.
Additionally, Neuer may never be subject to this penalty if he chooses not to retire, extend his contract with Bayern, or leave German football at the end of this season.
