Three-time world champion Vazquez of Mexico passed away at age 46 following a fight with cancer
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said on Tuesday that Israel Vazquez, the three-time super bantamweight world champion from Mexico, has passed away at the age of 46 after a fight with cancer.
One of Mexico’s most renowned boxers, Vazquez was renowned for his striking force and hand quickness. He battled Rafael Marquez four times in a rivalry with his countryman.
Last month, the WBC revealed that Vazquez had been given a cancer diagnosis and posted a request for money on the crowdfunding website GoFundMe to pay for his care.
“Israel Vazquez is at last at peace with himself. Sulaiman said on social media, “May God grant his wife Laura, their kids, family, and friends courage and support during these trying times.
“We are grateful to Israel for the numerous wonderful experiences you have provided us with, both inside and outside of the ring. Now that you are everlasting, rest in peace; everything will work out.
