Viera is named the new manager of Genoa

Genoa announced on Wednesday that Patrick Vieira, a former captain of Arsenal, will be their new coach.

The Frenchman, a former coach of Crystal Palace of the Premier League, has been without a job since leaving the French Ligue 1 outfit Strasbourg in July.

Alberto Gilardino, Genoa’s coach, was sacked on Tuesday after the team finished the season narrowly above the relegation zone.

With 10 points from their first 12 league games, Genoa is currently ranked 17th in the league.

The 48-year-old Vieira began his management career at Manchester City’s under-23 team from 2013 to 2015 before taking over at MLS team New York City.

He then spent two and a half years playing for Nice in Ligue 1 before moving to Palace.

He will reunite with his new hire, Mario Balotelli, after coaching the Italian striker for 10 games during their time together at Nice in the 2018–19 season.
