Ariana Grande tried out for a different role in Wicked

Ariana Grande first tried out to be Elphaba in “Wicked.”

The 31-year-old pop star plays Glinda in director Jon M. Chu’s new movie, which is based on Stephen Schwartz’s show. However, Chu has revealed that Ariana tried out for the role of Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba Thropp, the green witch, and sang all of her songs during the auditions.

This is what Chu told Entertainment Weekly: “We were getting mixed messages.” “Of course she’s coming in for Glinda,” I thought. Then my casting director said, “No, I think she thinks she’s coming in for Elphaba.” “That wasn’t the plan,” I think.

“They said, ‘Well, she got it ready.'” I was nice to her, and she was nice to me. We didn’t stop her.

“But I thought, ‘Why is she singing Elphaba right now?'” I always thought of her as Glinda, maybe because she has sung those songs before.

“We didn’t know each other well enough to say, ‘Okay, let’s settle this phone game.'” We’re here for Glinda. “All right?”

Ariana recently said that she had tried out for both roles, even though she “knew in her heart that she was only meant for Glinda.”

“In my heart, I always thought it was going to be Glinda,” Ariana said on the “Sentimental Man” show. “But I was hearing a lot of different things from people who were like, ‘Oh, they might want you to read for both.'”

“And I thought, ‘I guess that’s because they don’t know my voice, and they might think that my voice would be better for Elphaba.'”

“In my heart, I knew I was meant for Glinda alone.”

The upcoming fantasy movie, starring Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Jeff Goldblum, and Michelle Yeoh, is about two young witches who become friends until the Wizard of Oz breaks up their friendship because he wants to find someone to blame for everything that is going wrong.

Grande made it a “no-brainer” that she had to sing live during production in order to bring Glinda to life properly.

She told E! News, “It was a no-brainer for Cynthia and me right away.” “Of course we’re singing live,” we both said.

Her co-star, who is 37 years old, agreed and said that he or she thought it was “something special” to act and film that way.

He said, “There’s something special about being in a room with live music.”

The movie “Wicked” comes out on November 22, 2024.
