Darren Fletcher of Manchester United is charged with FA misconduct
Fletcher, the first-team coach of Manchester United, is being charged with FA misconduct for allegedly using foul language when addressing officials.
Following Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Brentford on October 19, the Football Association (FA) punished Darren Fletcher, the team’s first-team coach, with misconduct.
During the game at Old Trafford, Fletcher was charged for acting in a “improper and/or confrontational manner” and using “abusive and/or insulting words” toward match officials.
According to reports, the altercation started because United was upset with Brentford’s first goal, which was scored by Ethan Pinnock. Due to a perceived imbalance that infuriated United, defender Matthijs de Ligt had to leave the field three times to tend to a cut on his head.
At halftime, Fletcher addressed officials as they were making their way to the tunnel, and manager Erik ten Hag and assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy were also given yellow cards for their protestations about the decision.
One insider at the club revealed that tensions were high because of frequent stoppages that put United at a disadvantage. “The team felt a certain unfairness regarding the handling of De Ligt’s injury,” the source said.
Fletcher, who has made 342 appearances for United, has until October 29 to address the FA’s accusation.
The Premier League has recently implemented a number of disciplinary proceedings, including the one the FA took against Fletcher.
Matt Hobbs, the sports director of Wolverhampton Wanderers, was charged on Thursday for reportedly arguing with officials following Wolves’ 2-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City.
Gary O’Neil, the manager of Wolves, has also been questioned for his comments implying that referees might be biased in favor of the top six teams in the league.
In a different instance, after Nottingham Forest’s September loss to Fulham, owner Evangelos Marinakis was given a five-match stadium ban for spitting on the ground as referees passed by.
