Villa moves up to fourth place in the rankings as Man United wins for the first time in a month

Aston Villa moved up to fourth place in the Premier League standings on Saturday after defeating Fulham 3-1, while Manchester United relieved coach Erik ten Hag of some of the strain with their first victory in almost a month, a 2-1 success against Brentford.

As the league resumed play after the international break, Tottenham Hotspur overcame a deficit to defeat West Ham United 4-1, while Everton easily defeated Ipswich Town 2-0 on the road to extend their winning streak to four games.

The 10-man hosts have lost 21 straight games in the English Premier League after Brighton & Hove Albion defeated Newcastle United 1-0 and Leicester City defeated Southampton 3-2 on the road with a late goal.

After giving up a contentious goal at Old Trafford, Manchester United recovered and moved up to 10th place in the standings thanks to goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund.

“Every game we win is important,” Ten Hag, whose employment has been a source of conjecture, stated. “You can see the unity and tenacity of this team. We needed to score goals, and today we showed some resolve to do so.

“Today we scored two brilliant goals and we are very pleased with it.”

Referee Sam Barrott told Matthijs de Ligt to go to the touchline to stop the bleeding from a gash on his head, and Ethan Pinnock headed in Brentford’s goal from a corner deep in first-half stoppage time, leaving United with ten men on the field.

In a very intriguing match at Craven Cottage, where the home team missed a penalty and both teams had a man sent off, Aston Villa stretched their winning streak to six league games.

“We’re really proud of our mindset here. We are currently seeing positive outcomes,” Villa manager Unai Emery stated.

“Even when Fulham had a penalty and scored first, we focused together.”

After five minutes, Fulham took the lead thanks to Raul Jimenez, but Villa quickly tied the score after Morgan Rogers’ shot deflected wickedly.

Just before the hour, Ollie Watkins gave Villa the lead. Fulham’s troubles worsened after Joachim Andersen was sent off and Issa Diop scored an own goal.

Tottenham’s victory over West Ham in an intriguing derby that saw Mohammed Kudus sent off late for the visitors marked the return of captain Son Heung-min from injury.

After 18 minutes, Kudus gave West Ham the lead, but Spurs equalized in the 36th minute when Alphonse Areola tipped Dejan Kulusevski’s shot against the woodwork, causing it to roll along the line and in off the far post.

After the interval, Yves Bissouma side-footed home, but the keeper gave up an own goal after Son’s attempt bounced off Areola and a defender. Son then made a brilliant solo effort to get on the scoresheet.

With 13 points from eight games, Spurs are now in seventh place, while West Ham is in 15th place with eight points.

“I thought we were good today,” Ange Postecoglou, the manager of Tottenham, stated. “We had to put in a lot of effort in the first half, but after giving up, we rallied.

“The boys’ performance after that was excellent; they had terrific energy and some good goals, but I felt we could have had a few more. Greetings from the office today.

Michael Keane and Iliman Ndiaye’s goals in the first half were a just reward for Everton’s dominance at Ipswich, and even though they missed a number of decent chances in the second half, the home team never even came close to mounting a comeback.

After losing their opening four games of the season, Everton has now won two and drawn two of their past four games, putting them in 16th place with eight points. Ipswich is in 17th place with four points from four draws.

Facundo Buonanotte, Jamie Vardy, and Jordan Ayew scored in Leicester City’s victory over Southampton, while Danny Welbeck’s goal against the flow of play in the first half propelled Brighton past Newcastle.

While Liverpool, who are at the top of the league table, are hosting Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, Arsenal was playing away at Bournemouth in the late game.
