From today until Saturday, October 19, 2024, when the impeachment procedure against DP Gachagua is completed, he has also ceased any activities that take place outside of Nairobi.

At this point, Gachagua has the Senate to save him; that is, if he is successful in recruiting 23 senators to oppose the motion that was presented by Mwengi Mutuse, the Member of Parliament for Kibwezi West.

On Tuesday, October 9, 2024, at least 281 members of parliament voted to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua using the vote that was taken on Tuesday.

The vote was called by Speaker Moses Wetangula after only 44 of the needed 117 members of parliament voted in favor of saving the DP. A lengthy debate ensued, during which the proponents of the motion and those who opposed it fought each other.

Based on the results of the voting, the proposal will now be transferred to the Senate, which the Constitution considers to be the chamber of trial.

Prior to the vote, members of parliament (MPs) from a wide range of political parties presented a case against the deputy president, tearing into the defense that he presented before the House of Representatives.

The members of parliament agreed to send President William Ruto’s principal assistant packing after Mutuse selected 11 charges as their preferred option.

The allegations include, among other things, a flagrant violation of the constitution, the undermining of the President, the undermining of devolution, the irregular acquisition of riches, the public attack on a judge, the frightening of the acting CEO of Kemsa, the promotion of ethnicity, and the insubordination to the President.

It was sufficient for the resolution to be supported by 233 members of parliament for Gachagua to be impeached.
