Nigeria says 359 people have died from cholera in the first nine months of the year

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) reported on Monday that more than 350 people have died from cholera in Nigeria in the first nine months of this year. This is 239% more than the same time last year.

People in Nigeria often get cholera, which is spread by water. Health officials say that there isn’t enough clean water in rural areas and urban slums.

The NCDC said that 359 people had died from January to September, up from 106 during the same time last year.

Also, the number of potential cases of cholera rose from 3,387 the year before to 10,837. Most of the people who got sick were children younger than five years old.

The NCDC said that the city of Lagos, which is the country’s commercial center, had the most cases.

Friday, officials in northeastern Borno said that cholera had spread to the state. The state is also dealing with floods that has forced nearly 2 million people to leave their homes.
