His son Kelly Christopher Amos said on Tuesday that his father had died naturally in Los Angeles on August 21, months ago. He was best known for playing James Evans Sr. on the famous show.

In a statement, he said, “It is with deep sadness that I tell you that my father has passed away.”

“That man had the nicest heart and a heart of gold…” Everyone loved him.

“A lot of his fans think of him as their TV dad.” He had a good life. His impact will live on through the great roles he played on TV and in movies.

John is a writer who was nominated for an Emmy and used to be famous for playing the tough dad on “Good Times.” But he was fired from the show for fighting against stereotypes and losing his cool.

In high school, John played football at Colorado State University. He also tried out for the Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL in training camps.

But his career in show business took off when he got the part of WJN-TV weatherman Gordy Howard on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”

The actor from New Jersey was nominated for an Emmy for his part as Toby, the older version of Kunta Kinte, on the groundbreaking ABC miniseries “Roots” in 1977. He also had a recurring role as Admiral Percy Fitzwallace, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on NBC’s popular drama “The West Wing.”

One of his famous movie roles was in Melvin Van Peebles’ blaxploitation classic “Sweet Sweetback’s Baada* Song,” which came out in 1971.

As the manager of a fast food diner in “Coming to America,” he hired Eddie Murphy as the African prince and played his right-hand man. In the movie, Eddie’s character falls in love with his daughter.
