Eales, CEO of Newcastle, will step down after being diagnosed with cancer
Newcastle United announced on Friday that CEO Darren Eales will resign from his role following his diagnosis of a persistent type of blood cancer.
The 52-year-old Eales, who was born in Chelmsford, left Major League Soccer franchise Atlanta United in July 2022 after serving as the team’s president and chief executive since its founding in 2014.
Newcastle made it to their first domestic cup final in 24 years when he was at St James’ Park. They lost to Manchester United in the League Cup final in 2023, but they were also back in the Champions League the following season.
“Being CEO of Newcastle United is an extraordinary privilege and I am incredibly proud to be part of the club’s exciting journey,” Eales stated in a statement.
But I’ve realized that this is the ideal time to make this choice so that I can put my family and my health first.
“In the near future, the club’s daily activities will continue as usual, and I completely support a transitional period that will allow the board to thoroughly consider and select my replacement.
“I’m proud of what we have collectively achieved and I’m excited to see what’s ahead for everyone as the club builds towards a future of sustained success.”
Until a replacement is named, Eales will continue to oversee the club’s executive team, according to Newcastle.
