Military reports that at least 30 decomposing bodies were discovered in a boat off Senegal
The military reported on Monday that they had discovered at least thirty decaying remains aboard a boat drifting around 70 kilometers (38 nautical miles) off the coast of Dakar, the capital of Senegal.
The military stated in a statement that a patrol boat was promptly sent to the region after the navy was notified of the boat’s presence on Sunday night.
It claimed, “So far, thirty bodies have been counted,” and that more accurate information about the number of fatalities and the boat’s origin would come from investigations.
It claimed that the identification process was challenging due to the advanced condition of decomposition of the corpses.
One of the deadliest migratory routes in the world runs across the Atlantic, from the coast of West Africa to the Canary Islands, where most African migrants attempt to reach Spain.
According to a June report by the migration rights organization Walking Borders, an astounding five thousand migrants perished at sea in the first five months of 2024 while attempting to reach the Spanish islands.
