Crocodiles are washed into the community by floods that decimate the Nigerian menagerie

The facility announced on Tuesday that floods in northern Nigeria have resulted in the deaths of over 80% of the animals in a vast menagerie that houses a diverse array of wildlife, including lions, crocodiles, buffaloes, and ostriches.

In a statement regarding the floods in northern Borno state, Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo cautioned residents to exercise caution, stating that “some deadly animals have been washed away into our communities, such as crocodiles and snakes.”

The floods were initiated by the overflow of a dam in response to excessive rainfall, which resulted in the displacement of thousands of individuals.

According to the office of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, the catastrophe has also impacted other facilities in the state capital of Maiduguri, such as a teaching hospital and the post office. The office has advised individuals to evacuate the most severely affected areas.

The statement stated that President Tinubu expressed his sincere condolences to the government and people of the state, particularly to the families that have lost their means of livelihood as a result of the calamity caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam. It also stated that humanitarian needs would be addressed.

Last month, at least 49 individuals were killed by floods in the northeast, and in 2022, over 600 individuals were killed by floods.

Borno state, the origin of Boko Haram, is currently contending with a 15-year insurgency that has resulted in the displacement and loss of numerous lives.
