Namibia’s largest solar power facility to be constructed by Chinese companies

NamPower, Namibia’s state-owned power utility, announced on Monday that it had executed a contract with two Chinese companies to commence the construction of the nation’s largest solar power facility.

The country in southern Africa is a net importer of electricity, relying on neighboring South Africa and Zambia for power. However, the plant will increase the country’s present total installed power capacity of approximately 500 MW by 100 megawatts.

Kahenge Haulofu, NamPower’s managing director, stated in a statement that the plant will contribute to the stabilization of future electricity tariff increases, the advancement of Namibia’s economic development, and the promotion of environmental sustainability.

The German development bank KfW will provide approximately 80% of the 1.4 billion Namibian dollar ($78.33 million) project, with NamPower contributing the remaining funds from its balance sheet.

Firms The power plant will be completed in 18 months by China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co. Ltd and Chint New Energy Development (Zhejiang) Co. Ltd, with commercial operations scheduled to commence in the second quarter of 2026.
