AFCON 2025: Suleiman declares that Tanzania is a team in transition following their stalemate with Ethiopia

Interim head coach Hemed ‘Morocco’ Suleiman of the Tanzania national soccer team (Taifa Stars) has urged his team to exercise patience following their 0-0 draw with Ethiopia at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Wednesday, which resulted in a single point in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Despite Ethiopia’s ability to maintain possession and their composure on the ball, Taifa Stars maintained a strong defensive position throughout the game. Little pressure was exerted on either custodian, as neither team generated numerous clear-cut opportunities.

“No doubt, it was somewhat challenging.” Slowly, we initiated our journey; however, we continued to advance. We performed poorly during the initial half, but we made significant strides in the subsequent half. Particularly in the final twenty minutes, we generated opportunities; however, we failed to capitalize on them. “That is football,” Morocco stated, as reported by the Guardian.

“Ethiopia is a formidable team.” It is challenging to compete against a team that has a low block. We examined various configurations in the midfield; however, they proved unsuccessful. Consequently, we relocated to the flanks.

“This is a team that is currently involved in a transition.” Most of the players are young and require additional practice. We must continue to motivate the young players to assure their success. I am confident that this team will achieve success in due course.

The most promising opportunity for Tanzania during the initial phases of the match was provided by forward Clement Mzize. Despite Lusajo Mwaikenda’s perilous run down the right flank and his well-placed cross into the box, Mzize, a Young Africans forward, was unable to connect powerfully enough to direct the ball toward the goal.
