Friend Czyz amazes a humbled Klopp at Paris 2024
Even Juergen Klopp, the former Liverpool manager, is astounded by his friend Wojtek Czyz’s remarkable recovery from a severe football injury to become a multiple paralympic champion. Klopp was renowned for inspiring comebacks.
Klopp was in attendance at La Chapelle Arena on Thursday to provide his 44-year-old acquaintance with encouragement as he participated in the badminton competition at Paris 2024.
The two have been acquainted for over two decades since Czyz, a four-time Paralympic champion in athletics who has transitioned to compete in badminton for New Zealand, sustained an injury that resulted in the amputation of his limb and the termination of his football career.
Klopp was not a lucky charm for his friend, who lost to Briton Daniel Bethell, the second seed, 21-5 21-2. However, the Champions League-winning coach recognized that this was one of the unusual occasions in sports where the outcome was less significant than the act of participating.
“I am exceedingly proud of him.” Klopp stated, “We were standing in front of the Eiffel Tower yesterday, and we thought, ‘Wow, it’s super, super special.'”
“That’s another thing being here I sit next to his incredible wife Elena, and we both had tears in our eyes, because I know sport is always about results, about winning, but that’s much more behind that story and being here, it’s always so touching that I couldn’t get my head around it.”
Czyz was a promising footballer when he signed for Fortuna Koeln in 2001. However, he sustained a severe knee injury in a collision with a goalkeeper, resulting in multiple fractures. His treatment was postponed, necessitating the amputation of his leg.
Klopp and Czyz became friends after meeting at a charity match during the player’s recuperation.
“The story’s inception is undoubtedly slightly different due to the accident and amputation. Subsequently, he was a prominent professional athlete, and we were not particularly close at that time.” “We met in 2015 at the harbor in Lisbon, prior to my arrival at Liverpool. I was on vacation,” Klopp recollected.
“We were playing frisbee,” stated Czyz, who was soon to embark on a campaign for his organization, Sailing4Handicaps, which is dedicated to providing free prosthetics to amputees.
Klopp praised his friend’s voyage, stating, “It was destiny.”
“It is the most inspiring story I have ever heard; it must be shared.” It must be.

Nevertheless, Czyz is uncertain as to whether or not he would like Klopp to attend his subsequent match.
“I have to think about it because today was not such a success for me, maybe he’s a curse,” Czyz suggested.
Klopp, who departed Liverpool at the conclusion of the previous season after a trophy-laden nine-year tenure on Merseyside, responded with a hearty chuckle, “I relished each of the five points.”
However, Czyz approved of Klopp’s attendance at the Games, as it served to attract media attention to para sports, even if only for a day.
He praised Klopp for his advice, stating, “Juergen’s presence is a great statement and it makes me prouder of him.”
“Ten years ago, I would have likely destroyed all of my rackets after losing, but I now comprehend the situation.” I am currently being patient; however, it is evident that this was not the outcome I had anticipated for the day. Correct? He elaborated, “And this is what I learned from Juergen.”
“You have to keep going, you can lose, if you lose and you gave it all, then be happy with yourself.”
Klopp joked, “He’s too crazy,” when asked if he had learnt anything from Czyz. Our differences are comprehensive. He is engaging in activities that I am unwilling to undertake. The German, who is known for his trademark grin, informed me yesterday that diving with sharks is effortless.
