Nunez has been handed a five-game international ban, along with other Uruguay players, following their involvement in a brawl during the Copa match
Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez has received a five-match ban for his involvement in clashes with fans following Uruguay’s Copa America loss to Colombia in July, according to South American soccer’s governing body.
Rodrigo Bentancur faced a four-game ban, while Ronald Araujo, Jose Maria Gimenez, and Mathias Olivera were each given three-game suspensions.
Following Colombia’s 1-0 victory in the Copa semi-final, there was a physical altercation between Uruguay players and opposing fans in the stands.
According to Gimenez, the captain of Uruguay, the players were motivated by a strong desire to protect their families.
In addition to the fine of $20,000 imposed on the Uruguay FA, a total of 11 players were sanctioned for their participation in the brawl. Nunez received a fine of $20,000, while Bentancur was fined $16,000. Araujo, Olivera, and Gimenez, on the other hand, were each fined $12,000.
Uruguay’s next official matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers will require the players to serve their suspensions.
They will be playing against Paraguay in Montevideo and Venezuela in Maturin in September, followed by Peru (away) and Ecuador (home) in October, and Colombia (home) and Brazil (away) in November.
