Comoros is the 165th member of the World Trade Organization

Comoros has become a member of the World Trade Organization following 17 years of negotiations with its members.

The accession of Comoros to the World Trade Organization (WTO) was officially ratified by members in February of last year. However, the country became a complete member on Tuesday.

The WTO Director-General, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, is of the opinion that the initiative has the potential to serve as “a complement to the Comoro’s regional integration agenda on the African continent” and to facilitate economic transformation and modernization.

Moroni will be required to acclimate to its new status and fulfill its obligations prior to this becoming an actuality.

In fact, all interested WTO Members must be in accord that their individual concerns have been addressed and that outstanding issues have been resolved in the course of their bilateral and multilateral negotiations, as each accession Working Party makes decisions by consensus.

Subsistence farming constitutes the majority of the agricultural sector, which continues to serve as the foundation of the economy.

The United Arab Emirates and the 27-nation bloc are the Comoros’ most significant trading partners, as per the EU GSP.

Eight African countries, as well as twenty-two other governments, are currently in the process of negotiating their accession to the World Trade Organization.

The global system of trade regulations is administered by the World Trade Organization (WTO).
