Gallagher, an England midfielder, has been acquired by Atletico Madrid from Chelsea

The LaLiga and the Premier League clubs announced on Wednesday that Atletico Madrid has acquired England midfielder Conor Gallagher from Chelsea on a five-year contract.

Gallagher, who had been at Chelsea since the age of eight, has inked a contract with Atletico until 2029. The 24-year-old was acquired for 42 million euros, according to media reports.

Chelsea stated in an official announcement posted on their website, “We extend our best wishes to Conor as he embarks on a new chapter in his career.”

In the initial stages of his senior career, Gallagher was on loan at Premier League clubs Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion. He did not make his Chelsea debut until 2022.

Gallagher served as the club captain for the majority of the campaign as a result of injuries to Reece James and Ben Chilwell, and he appeared in 37 Premier League games, with only one match being missed due to suspension.

A new contract was recently offered to Gallagher by Chelsea’s new manager, Enzo Maresca, despite the fact that he had one year remaining on his existing contract.

In 2021, he made his début for England, and he has since earned 18 caps. He also appeared in five matches at Euro 2024, where England advanced to the final before losing to Spain 2-1.

Atletico’s other new signings, including Gallagher, will be unveiled at a party attended by supporters at their Metropolitano stadium later on Wednesday. The event will be headlined by Julian Alvarez, a former Manchester City forward.

Robin Le Normand, a Spanish defender, and Alexander Sorloth, a Norwegian striker, have been acquired by Atletico for approximately 200 million euros.
