Deadly Clashes Between the Army and Jihadists in the Mopti Region of Mali

The Mopti region, near the town of Diallassagou, was the site of a fierce conflict with militants on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of at least fifteen members of Mali’s Defense and Security Forces (FDS). The soldiers were on surveillance, as they were responsible for safeguarding local farmers who were en route to their fields, when they were ambushed by jihadists who were affiliated with the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM).

A abrupt and intense assault was launched by militants, who were equipped with motorcycles, vehicles, and on foot, near a hillside. Heavy weaponry was used by the Malian army in response, resulting in a protracted and lethal exchange. According to reports, 14 national guard members and one gendarme were slain, while others were injured or missing. According to sources, the assailants had minimal losses.

This occurrence underscores the continued security challenges in central Mali, where jihadist groups continue to operate, occupying localities, enforcing their own laws, and holding at least 150 civilians captive for several months. However, the jihadists persist in their menace to regional stability, despite efforts to secure the area.
