34 penalty shots were recorded by Ajax and Panathinaikos, setting a new UEFA record
After a 1-1 stalemate over two legs and extra time in the Europa League third qualifying round, Ajax established a UEFA competition record by defeating Panathinaikos 13-12 in a protracted shootout on Thursday, requiring 34 penalties.
Ajax, which achieved a 1-0 victory over Panathinaikos the previous week, conceded in the 89th minute in Amsterdam, resulting in a shootout that surpassed the previous record of 32 attempts set during the 2007 European U-21 Championship semi-final, in which the Netherlands defeated England 13-12.
SC Dimona and Shimshon Tel Aviv, Israeli third-tier clubs, established the world record for the longest shootout in May by attempting 56 penalties to resolve their semi-final promotion playoff tie.
The hosts secured the shootout victory with the assistance of Ajax goalkeeper Remko Pasveer, who made five saves and scored on his own attempt. Dutch international Brian Brobbey missed two penalties.
“Five is a substantial amount, yes.” Pasveer stated, “I occasionally save a penalty, but I doubt that you typically encounter an event as bizarre as this.”
“I believed that we would fulfill our obligation each time.” We will not allow Brobbey to fall behind the curve. Nevertheless, he failed to score, despite his consistent success during training.
Ultimately, Anton Gaaei, the Ajax defender, scored the decisive penalty. The quarterfinal round will be played later this month, with the Eredivisie club now facing Jagiellonia Bialystok of Poland.
