Tens of thousands of individuals in Sudan are at risk of mortality if the international community fails to intensify its response, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM)

On Tuesday, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) issued a warning that inaction could result in the loss of tens of thousands of lives, urging countries to increase their donations in response to the world’s largest displacement crisis in Sudan.

Mohamed Refaat, the head of the IOM’s Sudan mission, indicated during a briefing that the organization has only received 21% of the necessary funding to provide critical assistance to the Sudanese, who are currently grappling with starvation, disease, and floods in addition to the ongoing conflict.

“The international community is not doing enough,” Refaat indicated.

“Without an immediate massive and coordinated global response, we risk witnessing tens of thousands of preventable deaths in the coming months,” according to him.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that 10.7 million individuals have been internally displaced and 2.3 million have migrated across borders in Sudan, resulting in displacement for one in every five individuals.

Waves of ethnic violence and famine-like conditions have been unleashed across Sudan as a result of a conflict that erupted in April 2023.
