The Academy expresses deep disappointment regarding Teyana Taylor’s encounter with security at the Oscars
The Academy is responding to the situation that occurred between Teyana Taylor and a security guard during the Oscars ceremony.
The organization expressed its deep disappointment in a statement to Variety, stating that it was “extremely upset to learn about the experience endured by Teyana Taylor at the end of the Oscars ceremony last night.” The Academy highlighted its close collaboration with Taylor during the awards season, characterizing her as “nothing short of remarkable, supportive, kind, and all about community.”
Although the incident involved an external security firm, the organization highlighted that it is still accountable for the experience of every guest. Officials confirmed that they have dealt with the situation involving the security company and emphasized that the behavior was unacceptable.
“We express our gratitude to Teyana for her exceptional grace, and we are implementing the necessary measures to prevent such an incident from occurring in the future,” the statement continued.
A source who witnessed the event and spoke to Variety reported that the situation unfolded shortly after “One Battle After Another” received the Oscar for Best Picture. Film executives Pam Abdy and Mike DeLuca from Warner Bros. were said to be attempting to return to the stage for a cast and crew photo that was planned to occur during the ceremony.
The source indicated that Taylor descended from the stage to assist Abdy in reaching the area. Nevertheless, as they tried to go back, a security guard reportedly intervened. “Pam Abdy and Mike DeLuca were struggling to reach the stage, prompting Teyana to come down to assist Pam. However, as they attempted to return, a security guard intervened forcefully, placing his hands on Teyana,” the source stated.
The witness further asserted that the guard had previously observed Taylor descending from the stage during that moment.
“The man observed her as she walked down, and when they attempted to return, he was aggressively trying to prevent them.” The source indicated that the guard allegedly said to Taylor, “You owe me an apology,” which heightened the tension in the situation.
Security Industry Specialists, Inc., the organization in charge of event security, also recognized the interaction. The company stated that there was a brief interaction involving “incidental contact” as staff worked to manage a crowded area and ensure the safety of guests. The company also acknowledged that the incident did not meet its expected professionalism standards and affirmed that they have addressed the matter internally.
Taylor subsequently minimized the situation during a conversation with TMZ.
“Security was quite active,” she said. “There’s always that one, yet I’m completely okay.” I feel a sense of joy. There is no reason for curiosity. People often hastily draw conclusions. Ultimately, I have zero tolerance for disrespect, particularly when it is unjustified and without cause.
In spite of the incident, One Battle After Another showcased a commanding presence at the Oscars. The film by Paul Thomas Anderson won six awards, which included Best Picture, Best Director, Best Casting, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Supporting Actor for Sean Penn.
