R. Kelly has been released from prison isolation following a two-week investigation concerning the phone number of a retired warden
Singer’s attorney stated that authorities discovered no misconduct after examining the phone number associated with a retired prison official.
R. Kelly has returned to the general prison population following approximately two weeks in isolation, during which federal officials examined a phone number discovered in his possession.
The singer was housed in the Special Housing Unit at the Federal Correctional Complex in Butner, North Carolina, throughout the review. Prison staff were said to be looking into the reasons behind Kelly possessing contact information for a retired prison official.
Beau Brindley, his attorney, asserts that the investigation revealed no wrongdoing.
Mr. Kelly has been released from special housing. “No impropriety whatsoever was found regarding his possession of the telephone number of a former prison official,” Brindley informed Los Angeles Magazine. “He was held in special housing for about two weeks without valid reason before the facility was forced to let him go.”
Brindley had previously clarified that the phone number was associated with a former prison employee who had once held a warden position. The attorney stated that Kelly obtained the contact through a mentorship program during her time in incarceration and maintained communication even after the official retired.
Nonetheless, Dr. DeWayne Hendrix, a former federal prison official, stated that evaluations of this nature are typical protocol when inmates possess contact information for current or former prison personnel.
“According to BOP standards regarding employee conduct, staff must refrain from displaying favoritism or becoming personally involved with inmates or former inmates,” Hendrix stated. He also mentioned that inmates are frequently assigned to special housing during these investigations to safeguard the process and ensure security.
Kelly, 59, is presently serving a 30-year federal sentence due to convictions in New York and Illinois related to racketeering, sex trafficking, and child pornography. In April 2023, he was moved to the Butner federal complex, with federal records indicating a projected release date of December 2046.
