‘Finalissima’ match between Spain and Argentina in Qatar has been cancelled due to ongoing conflict
The ‘Finalissima’ match between Spain and Argentina, which was set to take place in Qatar, has been cancelled because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. UEFA announced on Sunday that the South American team declined several alternative options.
The U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran have impacted nations across the Gulf, causing disruptions in travel at some of the busiest transit hubs globally and leading to the cancellation of multiple sporting events due to safety issues.
The matchup between European champions Spain and Copa America winners Argentina was set for March 27 at Doha’s Lusail Stadium, offering fans the chance to see Lionel Messi face off against Lamine Yamal.
UEFA announced that they engaged in talks with the organizing authorities in Qatar and determined that the match could not proceed because of the “current political situation” in the region, which has created safety concerns for players and fans alike.
UEFA expressed its profound disappointment in a statement, noting that circumstances and timing have prevented the teams from having the opportunity to compete for this esteemed prize in Qatar.
The Local Organizing Committee of Qatar announced that disruptions in airspace and travel restrictions resulted in the cancellation of the Qatar Football Festival, which was scheduled to feature friendly matches involving the host country, along with Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Serbia this month.
The Football Association of Serbia subsequently announced that they would compete away in Spain on March 27 and welcome Saudi Arabia four days later.
ALTERNATIVES NOT ACCEPTED BY ARGENTINA
The cancellation of the Finalissima was not solely due to Qatar’s security concerns; UEFA stated that they considered other viable options, but these were deemed ‘unacceptable’ by the Argentinian Football Association (AFA).
UEFA initially proposed to hold the match at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid, featuring an equal distribution of supporters within the stadium.
An alternative proposal involved staging the Finalissima across two legs: the first at the Bernabeu on March 27, followed by the second leg in Buenos Aires during an international window prior to the upcoming Euros and Copa America in 2028.
Nonetheless, the AFA dismissed both alternatives. UEFA announced that Argentina proposed a counteroffer to schedule the match after the World Cup; however, Spain had no available dates. “In the end, UEFA requested a commitment from Argentina that if a neutral venue in Europe could be secured, the match could take place on 27 March… or alternatively on 30 March.” “This proposal was also rejected,” UEFA stated.
Spain was prepared to compete.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced that they had presented Argentina with “all possible options” in partnership with UEFA to facilitate the match, emphasizing their ability to organize the event on short notice. “From the very beginning, the Federation has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to ensuring this match takes place, as it recognizes the prestige and international reputation it brings during a pivotal World Cup year,” the RFEF stated. “Additionally, it has exerted considerable effort to make this happen. ” Spain, as always emphasized, was ready to compete.
The 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, is set to begin on June 11.
The 2022 edition of the Finalissima took place at Wembley Stadium in London, where Argentina triumphed over Italy with a score of 3-0.
UEFA HAS REJECTED ARGENTINA’S PROPOSED DATE
The South American confederation CONMEBOL stated that a single match in Madrid would “violate the principle of sporting fairness,” arguing that it is not a neutral venue. Additionally, they noted that the AFA had received a proposal to hold the match in Italy instead on March 27.
“Argentina accepted the idea without objection, except for the date, suggesting March 31,” CONMEBOL and the AFA stated in a joint announcement. “Unfortunately, UEFA announced that holding the match on the 31st—just four days later than the original proposal—was not possible, and the Finalissima was cancelled.”
The final round of World Cup qualifiers organized by UEFA is scheduled for March 31, with four teams poised to earn their spot in the tournament.
