Lauryn Hill Confronts Significant New Jersey Tax Liens Years Following Prison Sentence for Tax Evasion

The well-known Lauryn Hill tax debt has resurfaced as new records show that the singer continues to owe a considerable sum in unpaid taxes to the State of New Jersey.

State filings from the New Jersey Division of Taxation indicate that two tax liens have been issued against the Grammy-winning artist. One lien indicates an outstanding balance of $133,246, whereas another reflects a significantly higher amount of $758,912.02. Both liens continue to be active in the state’s system.

Nonetheless, Hill’s team indicates that the matter is currently being attended to.

A representative for the singer informed TMZ, “Ms. Hill is adhering to a repayment plan established with the State of New Jersey to address state income tax obligations that arose following the cancellation of a tour, which significantly affected the tour’s cash flow.”

The tax debt reported seems to be linked to the upcoming 2024 tour that includes Hill and the Fugees. The tour was called off merely days prior to the opening show, with the spokesperson indicating that this decision disrupted anticipated revenue associated with the performances.

Hill has faced tax issues for over a decade. In 2012, the renowned artist admitted guilt to three charges of tax evasion after prosecutors claimed she did not file tax returns on $1.8 million earned from 2005 to 2007.

She subsequently spent time in a federal correctional facility in Connecticut and was released in October 2013.

Over a decade later, Hill’s camp reports that the current situation is being managed through a formal repayment agreement with the state.
